The maid from Northeast Brazil is making coconut fish for our lunch today.
Watch video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SmIHA2KTVE
Here is our lunch: Coconut fish, potato salad and rice.
The fish tastes a bit salty which is typical Brazilian, There is not enough coconut flavor. My friends like it. That makes a good lunch.
The maid comes around twice a week. They pay her R$60 each time for about 5 or 6 hours of work. Many black women work as maids here. Most houses and apartments have maid quarters with toilet and shower. Many black women with high school education still end up working as maids or other lower pay jobs.
There is little prejudice here towards the blacks here. Multiculturalism has been around much longer than North America. But sometimes I can sense the differences in conversations and stories.
The maids always eat after the employer. Their duty includes dusting, cleaning inside and outside, washing and ironing clothes, etc. A full time maid costs less than US$500 a month. Like China, Brazil still have a good percentage of the population in proverty.
I also notice many cooks in restaurants are women.
