Democracy in Brasil
I'm in Barra Bonita, a town of 40,000--a major producer of sugar. The town is surrounded by rolling hills laced with cane fields and orange groves. We drove 3 hours because my Brazilian relatives are registered here to vote. Voting is mandatory here. 18 is the voting age. 16 to 17 has an option to vote. If one wants to skip voting, a justification form has to be filed and approved. Missing the vote is subjected to a fine of Reais 20. (US$1=Reais1.67)
"Brasil Got Talent"
The Brazilian general election of 2010 was resurfaced on Sunday, October 3, 2010.[1] The Presidency of the Republic, all 513 Chamber of Deputies seats and 54 of the Federal Senate 81 seats will be contested in this election, along with governorships and state legislatures of all 26 states and the Federal District.[1] A run-off will be held on October 31 if a candidate for a majoritarian campaign (President and Governor) fails to achieve more than half of the valid (unspoilt) votes.
Two nights ago, there was a late night live broadcast of presidential debate. This time there are 4 candidates to choose from. It reminds me of the US presidential debate of Barack Obama, John McCain, Sarah Palin, and Joe Biden. What a show of liars!!! Every four years, citizense go passionately crazy to choose who can tell the best lies. And every four years, the voters gather to listen to fresh lies again. Educated or not! Unbelievable!
Anyway that's my personal opinion. But wait, ..............I saw a graffiti near a mall. It says POLITICOS SAO LIXO meaning "POLITICIANS ARE TRASH". I just spot my Brasileiro.
