Rio de Janeiro

A Brazilian name can be as long as four words with more than 12 syllables whereas my Chinese name has only 3. This is my excuse for not speaking Portuguese!!

Brazil is the only Latin country that uses Portuguese language.

Most people in the world recognize Rio de Janeiro as the one thing they know about Brazil. They pronounce Rio with "R" sound. In fact, Brazilians pronounce Rio with "H" sound. It pronounces "Hio". It means river.

Rafael is a popular name here. When "R" is in the beginning, it is a "H" sound. Rafael pronounces Ha-Fa-Yel.

When the "R" is in the middle of the word, it pronounces "R". Such as the word "Pare" meaning Stop. It sounds Ba-Ra.

When there are two R in the middle of the word, it sounds "H" again. Such as Barra Bonita, it sounds Ba-Ha-Bonita.

Few Brazilians can pronounce my name. They skip the H and call me Enry. May be I should change my name for them to RENRY.
